10 Actors Who Almost Got The Roles That Would Have Ruined Your Favorite American Movies

They say that directing is 90 percent casting. Having the right actors can make your movie. Having the wrong ones can doom it.

A director’s job can become quite easy when he has actors who know what they’re doing and who fully embody their characters.
But not all films and not all directors are so lucky.
Many times, an actor will be miscast, and he or she sticks out like a sore thumb. It can be so distracting that it can derail an entire film.
Lucky for us, many of these potential catastrophes have been avoided. You would never know it, but some of the most iconic roles in film history were almost completely ruined by actors who nearly got those parts.
Don’t believe me? Check out the list below and thank God we weren’t subjected to some of these performances.
1. OJ Simpson almost played “The Terminator.”

This would have been a colossal f*ck-up for so many reasons. Firstly, Arnold would never be the massive action star he became without this and “T2.”

Hell, he probably wouldn’t have been the governor of California if not for “Terminator.” Not to mention, having OJ play an unrepentant killing machine would have just revealed itself to be the cruelest of ironies.

3. Nic Cage almost played Neo in “The Matrix.”

Honestly, I’d pay good money to see the Nic Cage version of “The Matrix.” But it would be more out of morbid fascination than anything else.

Look, Keanu isn’t what you would call a good actor, but he was a good fit for the part and the movie works with him in the role of Neo.

4. Britney Spears almost had Rachel McAdams’ part in “The Notebook.”

I don’t think it’s really necessary to go into all of the reasons this was a God-awful idea. All, I have to do is point you in the direction of “Crossroads.”

5. Leonardo DiCaprio almost played Patrick Bateman in “American Psycho.”

Leo’s a great actor. But whenever I see him on screen, I always think “Hey, that’s international playboy, Leonardo DiCaprio.”

He never truly disappears into his characters the way that Christian Bale does. I guess that’s why Bale has an Oscar and Leo doesn’t. Not to mention, Bale is nearly perfect as Patrick Bateman.

6. Bill Murray almost played Batman

This would have been badass in its own right, but obviously, could never have really worked out. Murray just isn’t the Batman type. Though, it would be interesting to see him play Alfred or maybe Robin.

7. Matthew McConaughey almost played Jack in “Titanic.”

McConaughey is the greatest thing since sliced bread, but he would have been all wrong for the role of Jack. He’s too… Texan. Also, before the McConaissance happened, no one would have turned out for something like this.

8. Sean Connery almost played Gandalf in “The Lord of the Rings.”

It’s hard to imagine anyone besides Ian McKellen playing Gandalf. He’s so iconic in the role of the sagacious wizard. And Connery is too ornery to guide Frodo through the trials and tribulations that he faces in Middle Earth.

10. Tom Cruise was almost Tony Stark in “Iron Man.”

I’m not a Tom Cruise hater like most people, but he would never work as Tony Stark, at least not as the Tony Stark we know and love.

Downey basically created the persona of this character on the fly and almost single-handedly launched the Marvel machine.

I don’t see Tom Cruise being capable of carrying that load, especially after the relative box office disappoints of “Oblivion” and “Edge of Tomorrow.”

13. Tom Selleck almost played Indiana Jones.

I can’t imagine anyone besides Harrison Ford playing Indy. He’s just so perfect in the role. Tom Selleck is great and all, and he’s gotten a lot of mileage out of that excellent ‘stache but, at the end of the day, there can only be one Mr. Jones.

14. Mel Gibson almost played Russell Crowe’s part in “Gladiator.”
20-Gladiator
Sure, Mel Gibson has played similar, historical action roles before in “Braveheart” and “The Patriot.” But Crowe owns this character.

Not to mention, if Gibson were in this movie, you probably wouldn’t want to watch it every time it came on TV ’cause, you know, he’s a terrible racist.
